Exploring Prehistory Across Africa & the World

Human origins and prehistoric cultures are a global story. Kenya and East Africa form a vital chapter, but learners can also explore South Africa, North Africa, Europe, Asia, Australia and the Americas.

East Africa

Turkana Basin (Koobi Fora, Nariokotome, Lomekwi, Kanapoi), Olduvai Gorge, Chesowanja, Olorgesailie, Hadar, Middle Awash. Densest early human record and oldest stone tools.

Southern & North Africa

Sterkfontein, Rising Star (Homo naledi), Taung, Blombos Cave, Jebel Irhoud (~300 ka early Homo sapiens). Critical for later human evolution and modern behaviour.

Europe & Asia

Denisova Cave (Denisovans), Neanderthal sites, Dmanisi, Zhoukoudian, Sima de los Huesos, cave art (Chauvet, Lascaux, Sulawesi). Key for interbreeding and cultural complexity.

Australia, Americas & Beyond

First peopling of Sahul/Australia (~65–50 ka), Beringia and the Americas, island Southeast Asia, and the global Neolithic transition to farming.

Ancient DNA (aDNA) Techniques

Ancient DNA is genetic material recovered from bones, teeth, dental calculus, sediments or artefacts that are hundreds to hundreds of thousands of years old. It has transformed prehistory.

  • Sampling – Prefer dense bone (petrous portion of the temporal bone) or teeth; work in ultra-clean laboratories to avoid modern contamination.
  • Extraction & library preparation – Specialised protocols recover short, damaged DNA fragments typical of ancient samples.
  • Sequencing – High-throughput sequencing; often capture methods target human or pathogen DNA.
  • Authentication – Check for characteristic damage patterns (e.g. C-to-T changes at ends), short fragment length, and consistency across samples.
  • Analysis – Compare to modern and other ancient genomes to study relatedness, interbreeding, migrations and adaptations.
  • Sedimentary aDNA – DNA can also be retrieved directly from cave sediments even when bones are absent.
Denisovan Discoveries – Key Sites

Denisovans are an extinct sister group to Neanderthals. Most knowledge comes from DNA and a few fragmentary fossils.

  • Denisova Cave (Altai Mountains, Siberia) – Type site. A finger bone and teeth yielded the first Denisovan genome. Multiple occupations by Denisovans, Neanderthals and modern humans.
  • Baishiya Karst Cave (Xiahe, Tibetan Plateau, China) – A mandible dated to ~160,000 years ago identified as Denisovan by protein analysis (and later aDNA from sediments). Shows Denisovans lived at high altitude.
  • Other Asian evidence – Denisovan DNA has been recovered from sediments at several sites; genetic traces persist in modern populations of Island Southeast Asia, Australia, New Guinea and parts of East Asia.
  • Interbreeding – Denisovans interbred with modern humans (and with Neanderthals). Some present-day groups carry 3–6% Denisovan ancestry.
  • Why it matters – Denisovans expand the story of human evolution beyond Africa and Europe and show that multiple human groups mixed as modern humans spread.
Major Stone Age Traditions (Global)
  • Lomekwian & Oldowan – Earliest tools in East Africa (~3.3–1.7 Ma). Sites: Lomekwi, Olduvai, Koobi Fora.
  • Acheulean – Hand axes across Africa, Europe and western Asia. Sites: Olorgesailie, Kariandusi, Boxgrove, Attirampakkam.
  • Middle Stone Age / Middle Palaeolithic – Prepared cores, points. Linked to early Homo sapiens and Neanderthals.
  • Later Stone Age / Upper Palaeolithic – Microliths, blades, art, ornaments. Sites: Blombos, European painted caves, many African LSA localities.
  • Neolithic – Farming and settled life from ~12,000 years ago in multiple regions.

  • Stone tools & use-wear – Technology, raw materials, behaviour.
  • Stable isotopes – Diet and climate from teeth and bone.

  • Phytoliths, pollen, proteins – Vegetation, diet and species identification when DNA is poorly preserved.
  • Dating methods – Argon-argon, luminescence, radiocarbon, uranium-series, paleomagnetism.
